Pursuing your LPC license can be both exciting and challenging as you traverse the ups and downs of internship. During your internship, many things are taking shape- clarifying your theoretical orientation, developing your identity as a therapist, and growing in your clinical skills just to name a few. An influential figure during your internship is your LPC Supervisor.
Having a supervisor is an investment of time, energy and money. From the beginning of your search, I encourage you to consider the qualities you’re looking for in a supervisor, and as you meet with prospective supervisors consider whether they are a match. Do you want a supervisor who is more tenured? Maybe you want someone who specializes in a particular area? If so, what area(s)? Is there a particular demographic you want your supervisor to be well-versed in? These questions are important to consider as you begin your search. I approach supervision in much the same way I approach working with prospective clients. I’m committed to both of us considering what the right fit is.
Initiating working with me as a supervisor involves several steps:
1) Meet together for an informal time to discuss what you’re looking for in supervision and how I might help. This is a great time to discuss any questions you have about the process as well.
2) Complete an application.
3) Meet for a final interview.
Upon acceptance, we’ll discuss start date and begin on paperwork that needs to be filed with the state.
Interns will have the following expectations:
· Meet once per week for a one-hour supervision session
· Keep record of your hours completed each week with integrity
· Be prepared for supervision (having homework or case presentations ready as assigned)
· Be open to feedback, operating from a teachable spirit
· Maintain the ethical expectations of your license by the state (maintaining accurate records on time, appropriate contact with clients, etc)
The fee for individual supervision sessions is $75/session. The fee for group supervision sessions is $45/session.
I look forward to talking with you more about the possibility of being your LPC-Supervisor. Reach out today to schedule a time for us to talk more about the process!
